Congrautlations! I am assuming that you are looking at this page because you are pregnant! Yay, how exciting!!!!
I recommend you book your session as soon as possible. But failing that I will try my best to fit you in. I generally book you in for a rough date 10 days after your due date. This of course isn’t set in stone as we know that baby will come when baby is ready. But it is good to have a rough idea when you are coming in. But I always keep a few days free each week for the early or late arrivals.
Sessions are done when your baby is between 5 – 10 days old in my natural light home studio and can last between 3-4 hours. When the babies are so young they curl up so beautifully due to being born with nearly 300 ‘bones’, while a full-grown adult has only 206. After that 10-14days (2 weeks) mark, start to fuse together into calcified bone, which makes it much harder for them to return to that in-the-womb position they’ve been in for the last 9 months. It is much more comfortable for them to be moulded into the adorable position while they still have the luxury of pure flexibility. That being said, every baby is different, and it depends on their individual growth speed rather than a widely spread “rule” whether or not they are safely able to participate in a true newborn session.
I personally recommend scheduling the session after 3-5 days, especially for breastfeeding moms, in order to make sure baby has somewhat of a feeding schedule and has learnt to latch correctly in order to get enough milk. Of course I prefer to schedule before that 10 day mark to make my “job” a little easier, but it’s not something I strictly enforce. In fact, I have a slight bias towards older babies who come in full of newborn chub.
My studio is nearly Manly, is very comfortable and has amazing light for the perfect images. I will do everything, change nappies, feed if you want me to, often get pooped on and a pee has been known to go all over my hand. I don’t care. I am so in love with this magical time that you have going on that it takes me back to when my mine were brand new and you couldn’t get over this love and protection you suddenly have. It really is a miracle.
I can’t wait to meet you all!
