For those that follow my work, you will know that I am trying to photograph as many births as I possible. I was lucky to photograph my first one in January and since then I have been trying my luck at making it to another. I have missed several now…and this was one of them. But I still managed to get some photos which I am hoping will bring back the memories to Melissa & David. Melissa and I have become good friends and chat regularly, so I may have missed out on the actual birth but I gained a friend!
Arlo was born at 12.50pm on Saturday 20th April. I had been in touch with Melissa regularly for a few months and we were pretty confident that I was going to make it to the birth. However on Friday night I had spoken to Melissa at around 10pm with Melissa saying she wasn’t feeling so well. Perhaps the start of labour? By 12pm Melissa had made the move to the hospital with contractions coming on strong and fast (husband David had been trying to catch the end of Shawshank Redemption, ha ha). They arrived at the hospital at 12.20pm same time as I jumped in the car and started making the drive down. Melissa was telling them she needed to push as they went over her notes, 20 minutes later Arlo had arrived. I was only 10 minutes away from the hospital when Arlo arrived. Me being selfish was gutted – I couldn’t believe I had missed it. But of course was thrilled that Melissa had a wee boy who was fit and healthy. Melissa is amazing – you would never have known she had just given birth. These incredible women never cease to amaze me. Having had 2 c-sections myself, I have never had to push a baby out – so will always be in awe of any woman who has! Thank you Melissa for allowing me to show these photos. Hope you love them!
A week after the birth Melissa came up to my studio with her other daughter Lola and we got some lovely shots of them together. This is why I love my job. I record moments in time that can be seen which would otherwise have only been able to have been described in words! xxx
One week later up at my studio…
